Decorating For Christmas

Our daughter recently started a job with a finance company. After five years in college she had finally decided on a major and completed her degree. She and a friend moved into a two bedroom apartment. They are both just starting out, but they want to be independent in purchasing things for their apartment. My daughter feels that we supported her enough getting her through the five years of college.

The girls have gone to second hand stores and discount stores to decorate their apartment. It looks nice and they will buy new pieces once they are able to afford them. My daughter asked us over for dinner early in December. She said they had been decorating for Christmas and they wanted us to see the apartment. My daughter has always loved Christmas as much as I do. She and I would spend hours decorating for Christmas when she was still living at home. My husband commented on our way over to her apartment that he hoped she did not spend a lot of money on decorating for Christmas because her car needed replacing very soon.

I asked him not to nag her about spending money. She is pleased with her salary and she is quite responsible. I reminded him that when we were her age we did not always buy the most practical things. He promised not to bring up the issue of her car.

When we arrived at their apartment you could see some of their decorations from the parking lot. They live on the second floor of a three story building. They have a deck that faces the parking lot. On the deck they had wrapped Christmas lights around the rail along with evergreen garland. They had red bows attached to the garland. Our family had always included the outside of our home in decorating for Christmas, so I was pleased to see that she was carrying on that tradition.

Inside the apartment the girls had bought a nice Christmas tree and had decorated it with lights and colored bulbs and tinsel. My daughter had also placed her assortment of ornaments on the tree that I had given her through the years. They also gift wrapped their apartment door. They had candles on the table and a nice center piece on the coffee table. My daughter’s first attempt at decorating for Christmas was a great success. They bought inexpensive things, but they grouped them together well and the over all look was very festive. I know she will add to her collection of decorations as the years go by.

Christmas Tree Skirt

A Christmas Tree Skirt is a wonderful way to dress up your Christmas tree and add a lot of personality and color to your living room. Everyone knows that the metal or plastic tree stands that hold your Christmas tree up are not very attractive. A Christmas Tree Skirt will hide that unattractive tree stand and add a level of style and elegance to your Christmas tree that may be seriously lacking. Many people overlook this simple addition when decorating for Christmas. I consider it a must-have because there was always one under our Christmas tree when I was growing up.

As a child, I loved to sit underneath our Christmas tree and look up at the sparkling lights and beautiful ornaments. I always laid my head on top of the beautiful velvet and satin Christmas Tree Skirt that my mother made. My mother has made many Christmas Tree Skirts over the years but that one was always my favorite. Even though we had silly little plastic ornaments on our tree, the skirt always added a wonderful touch and made the display much classier.

If you are looking to buy a Christmas Tree Skirt, you can find them at many large retailers once the Christmas shopping season has begun. I have seen many at Target stores and arts and crafts stores. Some are fancier than others and you should be able to find one that fits your personal style. Like I said, my mother always made hers but if you are not the accomplished seamstress that she is, you may just have to buy one.

If you do want to make your own Christmas Tree Skirt, you can find very simple and easy to do Christmas Tree Skirt patterns at fabric and quilting stores. The patterns are very affordable and you will be able to find fabrics that match your home décor and are reasonably priced. All you will need is a good pair of scissors, a ruler, pen, pattern, fabric, and plenty of working space. A good sewing machine will make the process go a lot faster but you can certainly sew a Christmas Tree Skirt by hand if you need to.

A tree skirt can do an awful lot to dress up your Christmas tree. I should warn you though that once you have one, you will think that your Christmas tree looks naked without one. I do hope that many of you choose to create your own skirts because it has been a wonderful tradition in our house that I have not seen in many. Just think - you may be starting a whole new holiday tradition for your family that makes the season just a little bit more complete.

Christmas Music

Christmas Music

One of the best parts of the holidays for me is when the Christmas music starts coming around. There are a few songs that I love a lot, but most of them are dear to me. Perhaps it is because those songs remind me of the magic of Christmas when I was a child. There are some songs I can’t stand though, and those are some of the parodies that you may hear on the radio. I guess I like the traditional, and those songs are the ones that remind me of family, friends, and Christmas day.

You can find all types of Christmas music at your local music store. If you like something in particular, you can probably find it anywhere. You can find religious Christmas music, or you can find your favorite songs sung by some of your favorite artists. I know some people who think that Christmas is just not Christmas without their favorite songs. If you love Elvis, having a blue Christmas may not sound like such a bad thing after all. Though I’m not entirely familiar with Elvis, I’m sure he did quite a few holiday tunes that many people still love to listen to today.

If you like Christmas music and you play an instrument, you can find sheet music for almost any song you can think of. If the song is still under copyright, you may have to pay for the sheet music, but it shouldn’t cost you very much. When you do this, you can play your favorite Christmas music for your friends and family. You can also find them online for download. You can find one song, or you can download an entire album all at once if you so desire.

Some Christmas music is classic, and you can find many different varieties of the same song. You can find some with vocals and you can find something done by a big band if that is what you like. In a world of popular music and in an age when the big band sound has all but disappeared from the charts, you can still appreciate the music as it was when you or your parents were children. You may find that modern versions of your favorite Christmas music is nice, but nothing will compare to the memories you have when you hear the songs as you heard them when you were very young.

Christmas Decorations

Most people have a room or two in their house that has been devoted to junk. For some people, it is some sort of collection that takes over a lot of space. For others it is a hobby or heirlooms. My junk room houses art supplies, extra clothes, toiletries, you name it. Anything that did not find a good place in the house ended up in the junk room. The excess went to the basement. Having storage space for rarely used items seems to be the most important reason to have a basement.

Our family is a bit unique in this aspect. Instead of the typical clutter, it is Christmas decorations that take up an entire room at my parents’ house. Boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations fill a twelve by twelve foot room in the basement but it does not stop there. My mother has stowed away dozens more boxes of Christmas decorations in the attic. After fifteen years in the same house, I have never seen the attic but I have a pretty good idea of what it must look like.

Judging by what gets dragged into the living room each year after Thanksgiving, she has managed to hide more boxes of Christmas decorations that I would probably believe. She has even managed to keep three, yes three, artificial Christmas trees. As children we all wore sweatshirts she decorated with wreaths and holly. Pretty fun all in all but I think we will be forgiven because it was, after all, the eighties. I almost forgot about the six foot Santa who stands just inside the front door to greet holiday time visitors. My father and I bought him, the king of all Christmas decorations, last year for her birthday.

You see my mother’s birthday is Christmas. Now you understand the mass of decorations. From Christmas candles, place settings, wreaths and stuffed animals, our house is filled to the brim every winter with Christmas decorations. The older I get the cuter it all is to me but first time visitors to this Christmas wonderland of a house are usually a bit shocked at first. It does not take too long to get a newbie into the holiday spirit around mom’s house though.

As a child I did not appreciate her overabundance of the Christmas spirit but as I got older I realized that few children had the magic Christmases that we did. Perhaps that tradition was the best Christmas gift we ever received.

Christmas Craft Ideas

The holiday season is a special time of year that is filled with anticipation and excitement. Parents have a great opportunity to make the season even more memorable for their kids by using Christmas craft ideas to arrange activities. The craft making sessions can become a new family tradition that serves a number of purposes.

Christmas craft ideas can address a number of developmental needs in younger children. Many of the projects require fine motor skills. These skills are crucial in the development of handwriting and drawing skills in the future. Choosing Christmas craft ideas that include coloring, cutting and lacing is perfect for the development of fine motor skills.

Children who have trouble staying on task may benefit from some of the projects. Kids who are motivated and interested in a subject are more likely to have better attention during an activity. Christmas craft ideas can be very motivating for a lot of kids who are just naturally excited about the season.

Allowing a child who has trouble with attention and time on task to choose from the many Christmas craft ideas available is a wonderful way to assure that he is really interested in the project. This interest will serve as a powerful motivational force that will help him attend to the task from start to end.

Many kids are trying to develop the ability to effectively follow directions. Following directions is a crucial part to learning. Many Christmas craft ideas are methodical in nature and offer a great opportunity for developing the skills required to follow directions appropriately.

Creativity is another great factor when it comes of Christmas craft ideas. Many kids would love to develop their own designs and crafts from scratch. This is a great way to get kids in the creative mood while motivating them to think. The great thing is that since they are thinking about Christmas craft ideas they don’t realize that they are actually learning in the process.

Learning though Christmas craft ideas involve wonderful approaches to helping your kids develop skills on various levels. When kids are having fun as they learn they are more likely to retain the information. The skills they acquire though the projects are applicable to other areas as well.

There are plenty of places to find great projects. I like to search though books and magazines in my local arts and craft stores. However, I have been drawn to the Internet for Christmas craft ideas, too. There are plenty of them out there. You may find that your kids come up with a few of their own.

Beaded Christmas Ornament

If you want to add some creative sparkle to your holiday tree that is truly unique you may want to consider the beaded Christmas ornament. There are many different styles and designs available. You can choose ones that are pre-made by crafters as well as professionals or you can make this beautiful holiday decoration on your own.

You local arts and crafts store is a great place to start for ideas. A typical beaded Christmas ornament design is anything but typical. You can be sure that no matter which design you choose you will have a unique piece for your tree. Making more than one ornament is also an option.

If you choose to make more than one beaded Christmas ornament then you should plan to put some time into the project. Most of the designs are quite intricate and involve quite a bit of effort and some practiced skill. However, the outcome is well worth the time and effort because you will wind up with either one great conversation piece or better yet, a collection of conversation pieces for your holiday decoration.

I have seen many different styles and designs with beading and holiday decoration. My favorite beaded Christmas ornament resembles a chandelier. Its oval shape has depth and texture naturally created by the crafting beads. The light from the decorated tree shines right through the ornament making the whole thing sparkle.

I was so impressed with the outstanding hand made Christmas decoration that I decided to make one myself. The pattern was a little challenging to find but there were so many styles that I chose a unique one that had the same look as the original one that I saw.

The one that I created is in clear as well as colored beads. I chose white and red for this particular beaded Christmas ornament because it suits my overall holiday decorating color scheme. Creating the ornament was a bit of a challenge and I think that my past work with beads really helped my efforts.

If you are a beginner with this kind of craft you may want to choose a simple pattern. There plenty of easier styles that are perfect for beginners. One of my favorite beaded Christmas ornament uses a traditional bulb. You simply make a netting of beads that drapes right over the bulb.

The netting project is a great place to start with this kind of project. In no time at all, you will be able to create any beaded Christmas ornament that you like no matter how challenging it is.

First Aid

First Aid is the immediate and temporary proper aid provided to a sick or injured person or animal until medical treatment can be provided. It generally consists of series of simple, life-saving medical techniques that a non-doctor or lay person can be trained to perform with minimal equipment.

History of First Aid

The Knights Hospitaller were probably the first to specialize in battlefield care for the wounded. St. John Ambulance was formed in 1877 to teach first aid (a term devised by the order) in large railway centres and mining districts. The order and its training began to spread throughout the British Empire and Europe. As well, in 1859 Henry Dunant helped organize villagers in Switzerland to help victims of the Battle of Solferino. Four years later, four nations met in Geneva and formed the organization which has grown into the Red Cross. Developments in first aid and many other medical techniques have been fueled in large by wars: the American Civil War prompted Clara Barton to organize the American Red Cross. Today, there are several groups that promote first aid, such as the military and the Scouting movement. New techniques and equipment have helped make today’s first aid simple and effective.

What exactly is Espresso?

Espresso (Italian) is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing very hot, but not boiling, water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a consistency between extremely fine and powder. It was invented and has undergone development in Milan, Italy since the beginning of the 20th century, but up until the mid 1940s it was a beverage produced solely with steam pressure. The invention of the spring piston lever machine and its subsequent commercial success changed espresso into the beverage we know of today, produced with between 9 and 10 atmospheres of pressure
